It also netted him a pair of 1967 Grammy Awards, for Best Country and Western Recording and Best Country and Western Performance, Male. Born Charles David Houston in Bossier City, Louisiana, he was a descendant of the Republic of Texas' first President Sam Houston and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He broke into the Country Music business when he became a regular on "The Louisiana Hayride" country music television show in Shreveport, Louisiana. He signed a contract with National Recording Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia and his first release, "Mountain of Love" reached No. 2 on Billboard's Country Chart in 1963. After his success with "Almost Persuaded" three years later, he followed it up with a string on No. 1 Country hits, including "With One Exception" (1967), "You Mean the World to Me" (1967), "My Elusive Dreams" (1967, duet with Tammy Wynette), "Have a Little Faith" (1968), "Already It's Heaven" (1968), and "Baby, Baby (I Know You're a Lady)" (1969). In 1971 he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee and reached No. 2 on the Billboard's Country Chart with "A Woman Always Knows" and his popularity began to wane after that. His last Top Ten Country hit was in 1974 with "Can't You Feel It." During his career that spanned three decades, he released 27 albums (including "Almost Persuaded" which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Country Chart) and almost 60 singles. He died from a ruptured brain aneurysm in Bossier City, Louisiana at the age of 57.
