Bettie Jane Houser, 92, of Boonsboro, Maryland, and formerly of Cumberland, Maryland, and Elgin, Texas, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Williamsport Retirement Village.

Born September 7, 1920 in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ellsworth Beeler, Sr. and Nina Marie (Bender) Beeler. Her husband of 61 years, Alton G. Houser, preceded her in death on August 9, 2005.

She was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro.

She graduated from Boonsboro High School and Hagerstown Business School.

She was last employed with, and retired after 25 years from, the office of Dr. Joseph Secondari where she worked as a medical transcriptionist.

She was a member of the Olive Branch No. 34 Order of the Eastern Star; American Legion Post 10 Ladies Auxiliary; the Boonsboro Historical Society; AARP; The Humane Society of the United States; and NARF.

She had served as a Girl Scout Leader, a Boy Scout Den Mother, and a Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by two sons, George A. Houser of Rockville, Maryland, and Brian E. Houser and wife Marcy of Tamarac, Florida; two granddaughters, Jody E. Houser of Hollywood, California, and Nancy G. Fry of Plantation, Florida; and one great grandson, Dylan A. Fry. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph E. Beeler, Jr. and James M. Beeler; and two sisters, Sarah B. Shafer and Mary A. Welty.

She was the last remaining member of her immediate family.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. Rev. Joseph I. Donovan, III will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Boonsboro Cemetery in Boonsboro.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
