Captain James A. Hoskins

The Hoskins family made their way to Brookhaven in 1863 from Kentucky. Before they came to Brookhaven, Captain James A. Hoskins went to Scott County to assist in the removal of Indians. He became a great lumberman and began preparing to develop the lumber resources in this area. He bought some land along the Illinois Central Railroad, and this purchase is how he made his ample fortune. He was married to Lizzie A. Whitworth, whose father founded Whitworth College, thus uniting two of the most cultured families in Mississippi.

He served as Captain of Hoskin's Battery during the Civil War. He had recruited and equipped this organization himself, which began service on May 11, 1861. He could well have been considered an expert in efficiency because of the development of natural resources and cotton lands he endeavored to bring about in Mississipp.
