Amos, Harriet Janet

Memorial services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel (9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield), followed by a graveside service at the Hill of Valor, on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., for Harriet Janet Amos who passed away on November 25, 2008. Pastor George Fraser of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Harriet was born on January 9, 1924 in Springfield, Ohio to Cora and James Hosking. She was raised in Redlands, California and graduated from Redlands High School in 1941. She graduated from Glendale Community College and then joined the World War II effort by working at Lockheed Aircraft Service at the Burbank Airport. She was a clerk-typist assigned with a group of co-workers on a MATS contract to re-condition C-54's with modifications and de-icer boots on the planes assigned to the Berlin Airlift. The unit received high praise and pins from President Franklin Roosevelt for outstanding service as Defense Workers. Harriet was very involved, supportive, and encouraging in everything that her family was involved with. Whether she was helping to care for a 4-H project or helping with record books, coordinating girl scouts cookies sales, assisting with school projects or cheering on the athletes and musicians in the family, she was always there. When she first arrived in Bakersfield she and her husband Lucian made many friends through the YMCA and the church. They socialized for many years with a group of friends that referred to themselves as the "Monthsters". She also looked forward to every Tuesday with the "Lunch Bunch", spending time with dear friends and sharing stories. And for the past 25 years, until her health prevented it, she and her family spent their summers at Pismo Coast Village where they reconnected with old friends and made new friends every week. Family genealogy was a passion for Harriet. From her family's history in Cornwall, England to their immigration to America during the California Gold Rush to work in the gold mines in Plumas County. In recent years Harriet had became involved with the museum in Plumas County by providing family information, artifacts, and stories passed on to her by her father and her aunts. After success in the gold mines, her father's family then moved to Redlands, where they played a noteworthy role in the settlement of Redlands. Harriet and her husband, Lucian were married on June 11, 1949 in Glendale, California. She is survived by her husband, Lucian; and two daughters, Sue Meeks and husband, Clifford, and Lorrie Roberts and husband, Kent. Five grandchildren: Alison and husband, Mike Hord, Jeffrey Meeks, and Amanda, Brittney, and Chelsey Roberts and three great-grandchildren, Zoe, Avery, and Gavin "Amos" Hord. She also leaves behind "Cousin Jack" their devoted Jack Russell Terrier. Harriet is preceded in death by her only brother, James Hosking. The family would like to give a special thank-you to the staff on the 4th floor and ICU-1 at Mercy Hospital for their support and care. We would also like to thank to Peggy of San Joaquin Family Medical Group, Linda at Alternative Home Care and the First Presbyterian Church. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity or donation of books may be made to any local school library.
