Judith Beth Geffen, wife of Magistrate Judge Ralph J. Geffen (d. 1999), passed away on October 6, 2011.
Born in Chicago to parents Rubin and Bluma ("Bubbles") Horwitz, they moved to Tucson in 1942. Judie loved horseback riding and dancing with cousins and local servicemen.
Moving to Encino in 1947, Judith attended Van Nuys High and explored the Encino horse trails with local celebrities. She attended UCLA while working for cosmetologist Aida Grey in Beverly Hills.
On a blind date, Judie met Ralph beginning a forty-three-year love affair. Raising her four children in La Mirada, Hancock Park, then Encino, Judie pursued her passion for makeup delighting many appreciative spouses.
In 1968, Judie joined her parents to form Bubbles Baking Company, leading with Bubbles' famous carrot cake.
A tenacious salesperson and innovator in the newly emerging frozen gourmet desserts market, she fought sexism and started a women's roundtable for food service executives.
Judie's parties were "can't miss." An endless stream of delicious food, cakes, and conversation flowed to unexpected guests for brunch or dinner.
In 1992, Judie and Ralph bought a ranch in the rolling oak and granite strewn hills of Glenville, California. There they raised lilacs, rode horses, and shared nature's splendor with grateful guests.
Judie is survived by sister Lael, children Shari, David and wife Barbara, Joel and wife Susan, and Gayle, grandchildren Blake, Brent, Melanie, Adam, Shelby, and Eli, and her later life partner Gene Mack.
A memorial service is planned for late November.
