Linda Lorraine Horton,
Chandler, Garcia,

Fredricksen

Linda was born May 29, 1939, in Maywood, CA, to Dana Norris Horton and Mary Martha Freeman. Her father was in the U.S. Navy and later became a Sheriffs deputy in Bakersfield. Her mother worked for Lockeed Aircraft, and later the catering business. She had a half brother, Karl E. Flenniken, who preceded her in death.

Linda and her parents moved to Bakersfield in 1945 when she was six. She attended Standard Elementary School and North High School. While at North High she was Art Editor of the yearbook, Snow Princess at the Winter Prom, involved in GAA and Art Club. While a senior at North High she was a Campus Deb Representative for Brocks Department Store where she worked, did extensive modeling, and along with other Campus Deb Reps from other schools, spent a week, in Hollywood with the stars touring sets, dining with Cecil B. DeMille, visiting Tony Perkins, Robert Wagner, Jerry Lewis, Jayne Mansfield, Clark Gable and many others. Compliments of Brocks Department Store, this was a memorable experience for her.

She attended Bakersfield College in 1957 & 58, where she met and later married Edward P. Chandler of Arvin. In 1960 she married Manuel Joseph Garcia and moved to Santa Barbara. She felt like she was in paradise. Joe and Linda had five children. Kelly Denise in 1961, Greg Adam in 1963, Joseph Dana in 1966, Scott Allen in 1967, and Leigh Roldan in 1969.

Linda moved back to Bakersfield in 1970 due to her parents declining health. She started O.R. Tech classes in 1971, and went to work at Kern Medical Center as an Operating Room Technician while also taking prerequisites for Registered Nursing. In 1976, Linda graduated from Bakersfield College with her RN license. Linda worked between Kern Medical Center and San Joaquin Community Hospital for the next twenty years. She spent fifteen years at San Joaquin Community Hospital working on the Heart Team and teaching. She loved her profession and felt she had chosen the right career.

Linda married Norman Fredricksen August 31, 1990. In 1998 after finding out she had Breast Cancer, she retired. She felt she needed all her time and energy to fight her disease. After chemotherapy and radiation however, she took many cruises, trips to Europe, and spent three months in Alaska in 2000. She loved to travel with a passion.

Her hobbies included RVing and The Elks Lodge Roving Elks, Mobil Nobles, and Swine Club. She enjoyed scuba diving and got her license when she was 54. She worked as a lifeguard at Hart Park and Saunders Pool, and donated lunch hours to work with handicapped children. Linda enjoyed playing golf, watching football, camping and backpacking.

Linda loved her family and surviving her are her 5 children, Kelly, Greg, Joey, Scott and Leigh; 10 grandchildren, Hannah Lewis. Trent, Tad and Ty Garcia; Joie and Kelly Garcia; Ashlyn Garcia; and Julian, Joseph and Nicholas Garcia; 2 sisters-in-law, Virginia Flenniken and Mitzi Flenniken; nephews, Darrell Flenniken and Eric Flenniken; niece, Dana Wylie. She was preceded in death by the father of her children Joe Garcia in 1999, husband Norman Fredricksen in November of 2001, her mother in 1986 and her father in 1989.

Linda wishes to thank special friends for their love, and for going that extra mile. Alice Newton, Andrea Martinez, Ann Gregory, Karen Condon, Barbara Clyton. Organizations she would like to thank include: ABWA, Elks Lodge #266, Elks Ladies, Jobs Daughters-Bethel #200.

On December 24, 2002, Linda went to be with our Lord after losing a courageous battle with Metastasized Breast Cancer. Her friends and family called her the Energizer Bunny because she just kept going and going and going. But she knew her real source of strength was the Lord. She felt so blessed because she suffered so very little. She also wishes to thank the many people she met throughout her life that enriched it so.

Dave Champness of Riverlakes Church will officiate. Members of the Elks Lodge #266 will serve as Pallbearers. A reception and short service will be held for all guests at the Elks Lodge, 1616 30th St.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, January 3, 2003, from 4-8 p.m. A Chapel service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.
