Death: Jan. 16, 2007

Wenatchee World - Jan 21, 2007

Denny Horton passed away peacefully from complications of pneumonia January 16, 2007, at Central Washington Hospital.

He was born October 1, 1915, in Ash Flat, AR to Alton and Crystal Horton. One of 11 children, he grew up in the Great Depression era and left his home for Washington State in 1936. There he met Dorothy James of Monitor where they married October 4, 1941, at the home of her uncle and aunt, Clarence and Betty James. He began a career in professional baseball in 1939, where he pitched for the Wenatchee Chiefs. He signed a contract with the New York Yankees and played for various minor league teams until the Detroit Tigers picked up his contract in late 1941. He was drafted into the Army in January 1942, and served in the Philippines. After an honorable discharge from the military in 1945, he returned to Monitor and began his career as an orchardist. There he and Dorothy raised their family of three. He ranched in Monitor until 2000, when he and his wife moved to Wenatchee. Denny was an avid golfer, hunter, sports follower and fisherman. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling in their motor home after their retirement. Kodiak, AK was one of his favorite destinations. Here he was able to spend time with family and enjoy the abundant fishing opportunities.

Denny's caring and outgoing nature will be greatly missed by his surviving wife, Dorothy. He is also survived by his son, James Horton (Merrill), Vicki Hester-Willett (Walt), Nan Missal (Rob); and their children, Scott Horton, Heidi Hester, Seth and Zach Missal and Ben and Kate Horton; also his three great-grandsons, Alec Horton, Dante McConville and Max Gatter; two brothers, Jim Horton and Bill Horton of Ash Flat, AR.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and eight siblings.

Services will be held at Betts Funeral Home on Monday, January 22, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Ceremony to follow at the Cashmere City Cemetery. After Graveside Ceremony a gathering will be held at the Cashmere American Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wenatchee Little League Baseball Organization or the charity of your choice.
