BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Mary Irene Horton Buchanan died Friday ( July 20, 2001 ) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital .
Ms. Buchanan was born in the Rye Cove community of Scott County, Va., and spent most of her life in Big Stone Gap, Va., where she was an elementary education teacher in Derby, Appalachia and Big Stone Gap. She had a BS in Elementary Education from Radford College and a Masters in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan M. Buchanan.
Surviving are three sons, Dan P. Buchanan, Huntsville , Ala. , Jim K. Buchanan, Hampton , Tenn. , and Phil Buchanan, Knoxville ; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverview Cemetery in East Stone Gap, Va. with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. today at her home, 322 Maple Ave.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Food Bank, P.O. Box 217 , Big Stone Gap , Va. 24219 .
