Donald R. Horton, the son of John Dallas and Florence Craig Horton, passed away Saturday night following a brief illness. Don was born July 28, 1933.
He was preceded in death by brothers Wick, Wayne, Ralph, Homer and Frank; sister Reba June; half-sister Betty Horton Thomas and half-brothers John and William Horton.
Don is survived by brothers Marvin Horton of Prospect and Glenn Horton of Grayson; sisters, Hazel Calhoun and Mary Durisoe, both of Grayson; his former wife and longtime friend Madeline Powell of Olive Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
Don graduated from Prichard High School and earned a Masters Degree from Morehead State University. After serving as a corpsman in the Air Force for four years he spent 31 years teaching history and driver education in the Carter County school system and served two terms as president of the Carter County Education Association from 1976 to 1978. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson, Olive Hill Masonic Lodge 629, and a member of the El Hasa Shrine of Ashland.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Tim Nischan minister. Burial will follow in the East Carter County Memory Gardens with military graveside rites by the East Carter Jr, R.O.T.C.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home with masonic services at 7 p.m. by Olive Hill Lodge 629.
