HORSEY, MARY HAMILTON LEE HORSEY (Age 96) Librarian and Foreign Service spouse, died in her sleep on December 29, 2011 at her Maplewood home in Bethesda, MD. She was born in St. Davids, PA, the younger daughter of US diplomat Joseph Jenkins Lee and Mary Kuhn Harris of Philadelphia, PA.
She grew up on her family's farm "Needwood Forest" in Frederick County and in Baltimore, MD. She graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart School on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC in 1934 and obtained degrees from Manhattanville College, NY in 1938, and Columbia University, NY in 1939. She worked as a librarian at Loyola College in Baltimore for several years, with the USO and at the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, DC.
She married Outerbridge Horsey in 1946 and during his Foreign Service career she lived in Italy (about 12 years), Japan and Czechoslovakia complementing his duties as a diplomat. After his retirement in 1970, she volunteered for the Christ Child Society, Meals on Wheels, Georgetown Senior Center and taught ESL in Washington, DC.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown, DC and St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda, MD, She belonged to the Colonial Dames of America, the Society of the Lees of Virginia, and the Chevy Chase Club. She read widely, was an intrepid traveler and enjoyed urban gardens, archaeology, painting, and her family. She was a direct descendant of Thomas Sim Lee, statesman and Governor of Maryland during the Revolutionary War and his wife Mary Digges Lee, patriot. Her first husband, Outerbridge Horsey, retired US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, died in 1983. Her second husband, William Wright, retired market analyst, died in 2007.
Survivors include four children, Mary Lee Russell of Falls Church, VA, Sarah Horsey-Barr of Washington, DC, Anita Horsey Gannon of Mercer Island, WA and Outerbridge Horsey of Washington, DC; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 2, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knoxville (Petersville), MD 21758. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: St. Mary's Church Restoration Fund, 113 First Avenue, Brunswick, MD 21716.
