Jack Duane Hopper of Altoona died Wednesday at his residence from complications of Alzheimer's disease surrounded by his loving wife, family and friends. He was born in Altoona, son of the late George and Marguarite (O'Donald) Hopper, and he married Cynthia ME Yeatts on June 19, 1996, in Cumberland, Md.

Surviving are his wife; two stepsons: Aaron M. Miller and wife, Melissa, and David V. Holton and girlfriend, Michele Hallinan, all of Altoona; his precious granddaughter, Ava Diane Miller of
Altoona; a brother, Donald "Bud" of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; two sisters: Jean Lafferty of Tucson, Ariz., and Betty "Bets" Cantor and husband, Dr. Milton, of Marlton, N.J.; his motherin-law, Maude R. Yeatts of Altoona; many nieces, nephews, cousins, brothersin-law and sisters-in-law; and his faithful companion, his dog Shipp.

Jack was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School, where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track. He was a running back and was selected first team all-state. In track, he held the long jump record for almost 50 years. He also participated in the 1941 Penn Relays on the relay team for Altoona High School. He won the Joe F. Cohen Blanket Award in 1941.

Jack had a chance for full scholarships at Notre Dame or Duke University but joined the U.S. Army. He spent three years as a technical sergeant with the 613th Engineers 3rd Army XII Corps in support of the 4th Armored 35th and 80th Infantry Divisions in their advance across France and Germany.

Upon discharge, Jack returned to Altoona and enrolled at Shippensburg College, where he was a member of the football and track teams. He was hired as a teacher and coach for Altoona and served from 1951-81. He was an assistant under Earl Strohm from 1958-69. He was the head track coach and was faculty manager of Altoona School District athletics from 1970-81. He was inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

After retirement, he worked at Luigetta's, Altoona School District Transportation Department and Dick's Pharmacy. He was a member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Jack was a true gentleman and will be missed by family and friends, especially Ray and Rose Weimer and Dan and Kathy Baughman, as well as former students and athletes.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Fourth Street Church of God, Pastor Jon Neely officiating.
