John was adopted by George and Hannah Hopkins at a young age. According to information passed down, he was related to his adoptive parents in some way.
In his younger years, John unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Scranton, PA on the Socialist ticket. He later ran for a U.S. Congressional seat for the same party and did not win.
He became a traveling salesman, settling in Detroit with his wife and two sons.
