Leona Ruth Hopkins, 89, of Girard, died at 6:59 A.M., Monday, September 14, 2009 in the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac where she entered in July of 2006. She was in failing health for three years.
She was born May 16, 1920 at Stark, Kansas, a daughter of Hugh L. "Buddy" and Lela Bell (Furry) Cecil. She graduated from Stark High School in 1937.
She married Albert Marvin Hopkins on January 1, 1940 in Girard. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1979..
She was a homemaker, a loving mother and wife.
Survivors include daughters Dorothy Hopkins of the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac and Lorena Lewis and husband Marvin of Girard; grandchildren are Tom Lewis and wife Brenda of Bradford, Arkansas, Cheryl Hill and husband Charlie of Uniontown, Kansas, and Angela Lewis of Sedalia, Missouri; Nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers William and Howard, a sister, Dora, a grandson, Robert Lewis and a great-grandson, David Lange.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday at the Girard Cemetery with Pastor Ernie Watson and Pastor Marvin Boore officiating. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. Friends may call after 2 P.M., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard or visit Dorothy Hopkins at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac.
