Mary Jane (Hoover) Baer, 90, died on Monday, May 10, 2010, at Providence Place of Dover where she had resided since 2006. She was married for 62 years to Earl S. Baer, Sr. who preceded her in death in 2002.
Ms. Baer was born December 22, 1919, in York, the thirteenth and youngest child of the late Albert and Grace (Bitner) Hoover.
She was the last surviving sibling and lived to be the oldest. She grew up in Windsor Park and attended school there and at Mt. Rose. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, York, as well as a past member of Emmanuel Lutheran (Windsor Park), Our Savior Lutheran and St. Mark Lutheran (York) and St. Andrew Lutheran (Dover, Del.). In addition, she sang in the choirs of all the churches she attended. During her teen years, she found that she had a talent for writing poetry and wrote many religious and inspirational poems. She was known for giving poetry readings at local churches, senior groups, nursing homes and social organizations throughout York County. She recently recited her poem "Natures Wonders" at a tree dedication in her honor at Providence Place. Some of her poems have been published and have been translated into Braille. Many appeared in the York newspaper's "Poet's Den."
She is survived by her son, Earl S. Baer, Jr. and wife, Glenda and daughter, Phyllis J. Lanoue and husband, Richard, all of Dover; four grandchildren, Julie Unger and husband, Dave of York, Sara Walters and husband, Paul of Dover, Mark Lanoue and wife, Melissa of Cincinnati, Ohio and Curtis Lanoue and wife, Kara of Miami, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Louise Hoover of Lititz and Thelma Hoover of York; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Melvin Whipperman.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Carl, Albert, Robert, Paul, Samuel, William, Ralph, Jacob, the Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Hoover; and her sister, Grace Heiner. Two sisters died in infancy prior to her birth.
Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
