James S. Hooper Obituary
1923 ~ 2014
James S. Hooper passed away on November 23, 2014 with his son and daughter at his side. He is now reunited with his loving wife of 60 years. He has been a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Jim was born on July 4, 1923 to James Alma and Robenia Sproul Hooper. As a youth his favorite hobby was building radios. That interest stayed with him and he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1944, returning in 1954 for electrical graduate studies.
Jim was an Ensign in the United States Navy stationed in Hawaii after receiving sonar training. Upon his honorable discharge he began his career with Utah Power & Light. He started as a traveling maintenance man and retired thirty seven years later as the Manager of Operations.
He and his beautiful bride, Wilma K. Sprunt, were married in the Salt Lake Temple on February 16th, 1948 by Ezra Taft Benson, a friend of both families. Over the years, Jim was a faithful and diligent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served many capacities in the Monument Park 1st Ward, Monument Park Stake and Bonneville Stake. In 1989, Jim and Wilma left their home of forty years and moved to the Canyon Road Towers where he not only enjoyed many dear friendships but also served as counselor to two bishops and as 2nd counselor in the Eagle Gate Stake Presidency.
Jim Hooper and his family always loved his 4th of July birthday celebrations at the cabin where we enjoyed Lee's homemade peach ice cream and fun times with all the nieces and nephews.
For several years Jim was an amazing care giver to his sweet wife, setting the supreme example of love and sacrifice. Dad, you are our hero.
Jim Hooper is survived by his son, James W. (Sheri),St George, Utah; his daughter, Kathryn (Larry) Smith, Olympia, WA; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife and his sister, Robenia Beckstead.
A service will be held at Larkin Mortuary on South Temple on Saturday, Nov 29th at noon with a viewing one hour prior. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawns.
