Story submitted to "Early Settlers" Book 9/05 (BBWatson)
Peyton Fletcher (ca. 1800 - ca. 1855 Fisherville, Shelby Co., TN), former soldier of the Indian Wars, married Sarah W. Graves (ca. 1795 VA - 1853 Fisherville, Shelby Co., TN) 26 Jan 1830 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Although reported to have been born in Kentucky, Tennessee was listed as Peyton’s state of birth on the 1850 census; Georgia was listed in his daughter’s 1880 census. Because Peyton was listed in the Davidson County Census in 1830 with 6 children under the age of 20, Peyton and/or Sarah probably had been previously married and widowed. (Graves may not have been Sarah’s maiden name.)
Peyton and Sarah Fletcher migrated with their family from the Nashville area to Shelby County by 1836 (Tax List). He became a highly successful planter in eastern Shelby County with large land holdings. Peyton and Sarah lived in Fisherville from 1836 through 1850. He was appointed to several positions of public service: determined term of court elected officials, made a list of taxable property, and held elections.
Mary Jane Fletcher (7 Feb 1831/1833 - 27 Feb 1907) married (1) James M. Rodgers (ca. 1830 - aft 1854) on 22 Jun 1850. James was the son of William Cullen Rodgers (1801 NC - 11 Aug 1857 Shelby, TN) & Elizabeth Jernigan (1805 NC - 1850 TN). Per the family Bible, William Cullen Rodgers was the son of William Rodgers (6/28/1779 - 1857) & Ann Brown (4/23/1777 - 1841) who were m. in 1799. (James was an executor to Peyton's will in 1854.)
