Elizabeth (Betty) Driscoll Holmes, 91, of Narragansett, RI, the widow of the late Howard W. Holmes and daughter of the late Thomas Henry Driscoll and Anna Welch Driscoll, also all of Providence.

Mrs. Holmes was born and raised in Providence, where she lived for 49 years and was a parishioner at St. Sebastian's Church. She graduated from St. Xavier's Academy, Providence, and Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC. She returned to Providence after graduating from college and worked as a social worker until she married her late husband on October 6, 1945. She is survived by her six children: Howard; Ann and her husband Tom DiLuglio; Ginny Carroll and her husband Jim; Tommy and his wife Donna; Siobhan Holmes Early and Lily Holmes. She is also survived by six devoted grandchildren: Meghan Carroll McMahon and her husband Gregory; William Carroll; Jeffrey Howard Early, Erica and Caitlin Holmes and Howard C. Holmes.

Betty Holmes and her late husband were members of The Metacomet Country Club, East Providence, RI; the Point Judith Country Club and The Canonchet Beach Club in Narragansett. In the summer, she loved her daily trips to the beach with her family where she often sat and read quietly for hours.

Betty and her husband Howard traveled to Italy frequently, where they spent several weeks in Rome, Florence and Venice. For Mrs. Holmes, the highlight of one trip was a private audience with Pope Paul VI.

In 1971 Mrs. Holmes moved to Saunderstown, RI, where she resided for more than 30 years, and became a parishioner at St Thomas More Church, Narragansett. She was a volunteer at South County Hospital for a few years, and sponsored a child from the Fresh Air Fund for several summers. An avid sports fan, Mrs. Holmes contributed to the URI Athletic Foundation and the Narragansett Little League. In 2002 Mrs. Holmes moved to the home of her beloved daughter, Siobhan Early, in Narragansett.

Betty Holmes shared her passion for all sports with her children and grandchildren. For years she was a loyal Red Sox Fan, thrilled to meet some players after a World Series Game in Boston. Years later she became a Yankees fan, accompanying her granddaughter and grandsons to games, including World Series games, in NYC. Betty also loved the arts and often accompanied her family to the theatre and ballet.

Calling hours are Wednesday 4:00-7:00 PM at the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. There is a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at the St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland Street Narragansett. Burial follows immediately at St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Saint Thomas More Church or Trinity Washington University, 125 Michigan Avenue. NE. Washington, DC 20017.
