William was the son of James and Louisa Holmes of 4, Junction Street, Walsall.

Enlisting at Lichfield in 1912 in the 2nd Bn, South Staffordshire Rgt, William was posted to France on Wednesday 12/08/1914 and at some stage he transferred to the 8th Bn within the regiment.

At the time of William’s death by shellfire his battalion were in trenches at Lesbœufs, 3,000 yards east of Delville Wood.
On this one day alone the German shelling cost the battalion 6 officers and 70 other ranks killed.
