Mrs. Edith Eloise Holmes McCormick, 96, of Fredericksburg, VA died Sunday at Hughes Holmes in Fredericksburg, VA.
Mrs. McCormick, born in Loyal, Kingfisher County, OK, was the daughter of the late Herbert and Frances Holmes. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar H. McCormick, a brother, Lewellyn H. Holmes, two sisters, Thelma Allen and Lucille Kudlac and a niece, Carolyn Vculek. The family moved to Hennessey, Ok. soon after Edith won several awards in the annual county and state-wide scholastic music and voice competitions. She graduated from Hennessey High School with the class of 1931. She attended Oklahoma University and over the next few years she taught music in public shools at Dover, Stratford and St Louis, Oklahoma. In 1940 she moved to Washington, DC, where she was employed by the Federal Government on Capital Hill. Edith married Oscar H. McCormick in December 1941. During World War II, she worked for the British Army Staff Office in Washington, and after the war took a position with the Headquarters of the American Red Cross where she was employed until her retirement in 1973. She and Oscar then moved to Bolivar, WV. where they opened the Washington Street Antiques business. Following Oscar's death in 1981, Edith continued to be a very active member of the community. Especially important in her life was the Bolivar United Methodist Church where she served her Lord in many capacities through the years. She was still serving as pianist for Sunday morning services in 2000, when she moved to be with her brother and his wife, Harold and Winnibel Holmes in Fredericksburg, VA.
She is survived by a brother, Harold G. Holmes and his wife Winnibel of Fredericksburg, VA; a sister, Connie Vculek and her husband Stanley of Yukon, OK; a brother-in-law, Joseph Kudlac of Enid, OK; a nephew and his wife Elena of Bristow, VA; a niece, Carol Covington and her husband Christopher of Fredericksburg, VA; a niece, Joan Winterringer of Enid, a nephew, David Vculek, a niece, Brenda Monroe, a nephew, Jerry Kudlac and his wife Cleo all of Yukon. OK.
The family recieved friends Thursday, February 18, 2010, one hour prior the services at the funeral home.
The funeral services were held at 11am, Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, US 340at Halltown Rd, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry with the RTev. Douglas Fraim officiating.
Burial was made in Fairview Lutheran Cemetery, Bolivar, WV.
