His father was Daniel W. Hollopeter and his mother, Harriet A. (Ingle) Hollopeter.

He married Sarah Brown about 1882 in Ohio. Her father was Eli Brown and her mother, Eva (Smith) Brown.

They moved to Iowa where they resided about 8 years, and then moved to Carrington, Foster County, North Dakota for 3 years. In 1901 they came to Harrington, Lincoln County, WA.

In 1917 they moved to Spokane, WA and he lived the last 14 years of his life at South 214 Jefferson, Spokane. WA.

He worked for the Great Northern Railway as an agent.

From the Harrington Citizen Newspaper, 20 March 1931"Joe" Hollopeter was a good citizen and neighbor, a loving husband and fond father. He was a good conversationalist, perfectly at ease in any crowd, which he could entertain from his store of rich experiences gained through years of mixing with humanity as it flowed to and from across the continent behind the steam horse. He was courteous, obliging and accommodating, always solicitous for the unfortunate, the weaker and the needy."

He was a member of the higher Masonic orders and the Rose Croix services were held for him at Spokane where his friends of that city and fraternal brothers paid their last tribute to him.

His death was from a heart attack. His funeral service was held at the Harrington Community Congregational Church.
