June Esther Hanke, age 82, of Friendship, died Monday, June 9, 2008, in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday,
June 14, in Roseberry's Funeral Home, Friendship. Interment will be in Mt. Repose Cemetery, Friendship. Visitation is Friday, June 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Roseberry's Funeral Home, Friendship.
June was born March 16, 1926 on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Coloma. She was the daughter of Ed and Mary (Lish) Hollman.
She attended Pilot Knob School and married Carl William Hanke of Whitehall on Dec. 12, 1943 in Belton, Texas, before he left for World War II. They were happily married for over 53 years.
June's first employment was at the Friendship Hotel. She went on to work at the, Adams County Memorial Hospital for over 28 years. She worked in the Lab and X-Ray and went on to become the director of purchasing until she retired. June and her husband also had a flag business for over 25 years.
She was involved in the Friendship community and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary (for over 50 years), the Friendship Fire Dept. Auxiliary, and was a member of the Moundview Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed traveling and sightseeing and she and her husband looked forward to spending the winter months in their home in Florida.
Her other hobbies included her vegetable and flower gardens where she was most fond of her hollyhocks and trumpet vines. She loved music, dancing, cooking, baking, and most of all her family.
She treasured her grandchildren, Brian and Darin Machan (and their wives), and great-grandsons Joshua and Peyton Machan, and one on the way.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband; and a sister, Irene Hollman.
Surviving are: her daughter, Carlette-Rhea (Gary) Machan, Sioux City, Iowa; grandsons, Brian (Jen) Machan of Ankeny, Iowa, and Darin (Amy) Machan of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; great-grandsons, Joshua and Peyton Machan, Dakota Dunes, S.D.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janice and John Tranberg of Kenosha; a sister-in-law, Julia Hanke of Milwaukee; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
