SHERRILL >> Norma L. Bortle, age 91, formerly of Kinsley Street and Clare Bridge of Clinton passed away Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2014 in the Samaritan Summit Village Skilled Nursing Facility of Watertown with her son and daughter by her side.
She was born on Sept. 1, 1922 in Sherrill, N.Y. a daughter of the late Lynn Roy and Minnie (Steiner) Hollingsworth and was a graduate of Sherrill High School Class of 1940.
On Dec. 10, 1942, Norma and her high school sweetheart, Walter H. Bortle, were united in marriage at the U.S. Army Air Corp Post Chapel, Lake Charles, La. The couple shared this union for over 69 years, until Mr. Bortle's death on March 7, 2012.
Norma was a member of Plymouth Church of Sherrill and was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She took great pleasure in her cooking, baking, cross stitching, and gardening. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and shuffleboard and was quite the 'Pitch' player. But most of all, she devoted her time and energies to her family, who adored her immensely. Norma was a very special lady who was loved and admired by all who knew her. She never had an unkind word.
Surviving are her five children and their spouses, Wesley A. (Jeanne) Bortle of Shalimar, Fla., Patricia L. (Cristy) Barnhart of Three Mile Bay, Vicki A. Haslauer of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Lori J. (Richard) Belle of Syracuse and Walter H. Jr. (Diane) Bortle of Cochranville, Penn.; her 16 beloved grandchildren, Jeremiah (Jennifer) Bortle, Jon Bortle, Janelee Music, Shaun (Tammie) Barnhart, Jeffrey (Jackie) Barnhart, Vicki Lynn (Keith) Atkins, Joseph Haslauer, Shane Haslauer, Amanda (Stanton) Mills, Richard Belle Jr., Denise Belle, Deanna Belle, Michael Belle, Kaye Bortle, Anna Bortle, and Ava Bortle; also nine great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Norma is also survived by her sister-in-law Martha L. Bortle of Tucson, Ariz. She was predeceased by her brother LeRoy (Stubby) Hollingsworth.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 464 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, N.Y. Norma's funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., or Plymouth Alliance Church 169 Kinsley St., Sherrill, N.Y. with the Rev. Kurt Johnson officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida, N.Y. In memory of Norma donations may be sent to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer's Association .
