Jeanette Catherine Hollar Harkness


Granite Falls, N.C. - Mrs. Jeanette Catherine Hollar Harkness, 72, went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family, Monday, June 15, 2009, at Lutheran Home-East.

She was born in Caldwell County on May 25, 1937, a daughter of the late Will Hollar and Fannie Duncan Hollar.

Jeanette was a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church and served as Sunday school teacher, WMU director, choir member and GA/Acteen Leader. She was a Girl Scout leader and past Marine Corps Staff Wives Club Leader. She was a homemaker and active parent in her children's lives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 55 years, Richard A. Harkness of the home, whom she married Jan. 9, 1954, at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church. Adored and dedicated mother to Kathy Lail and husband, Duran Lail, of Bethlehem, Pam Pritchard of North Wilkesboro, Richard Harkness and wife, Nancy Harkness, of Wake Forest, the Rev. Michael Harkness and wife, Ina Lee Harkness, of Virginia and Teresa Young and husband, Bill Young, and Cynda Bollinger and husband, the Rev. Scott Bollinger, all of Hickory. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her dearly are Richie Fox, Jennifer Duncan, Kellen Harkness and wife, Alana, Megan Lail and fiance, Robbie Putnam, Patrick Young, Kristen Lail, Adam Young, Amelia Harkness, Leah Harkness, Calyn Lail, Riley Bollinger and Grace Bollinger, and great-grandchildren, Bayle Stone, Aaron Fox, Taylor Fox, Kiera Duncan and Lucy Harkness. She also is survived by a much-loved sister, Ann Crouch of Conover; sister-in-law, Celia Pirch of Michigan; brothers-in-law, Sonny Harkness and wife, Patricia, and Donald Harkness and wife, Nancy, all of Michigan; and a great number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Mrs. Harkness will be held at noon Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ron Winkler and Don Ingle officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
