The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

HOLROYD, HERBERT WILSON. Lance Corporal. No 10374. 1st Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Born Huddersfield 4.6.1896. Son of Levi and Jane Ellen Holroyd, 17 Longroyd Place, Longroyd Bridge, Huddersfield. Educated St. Thomas's Church of England School, Longroyd Bridge. Enlisted at the outbreak of the war. Reported missing, presumed killed, 8.5.1915, aged 18 years. Has no known grave.

Commemorated MENIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

The following extract is taken from 'British Battalions on the Western Front January to June 1915' by Ray Westlake. Pages 173: 'May–June. Withdrew from front line 3rd May and to camp west of Ypres. Moved forward to reserve dugouts near Friezenberg on 5th and took over front line trenches 7th. Enemy attacked 8th. War diary records 'C ' and 'D' Companies forced out of their trenches, 'A' and 'B' drove off three German attacks. Casualties for 8th May – 418 killed, wounded or missing.'
