She was the daughter of William and Mary (Shearer) Hoke, who came to Marion County from Franklin County, Pennsylvania in 1865. Her siblings were: Elizabeth, wife of John Snider Smith; William; Barbara, who was the wife of A.J. Unger; Michael; and Elizabeth.
Her mother died in Waldo, Ohio, after which time her father re-married to Nancy Rhinehardt and re-located to Kansas.
