Edson Allen Hoffmann was born 6 Nov 1878 in Leipzig, Germany to Caroline Virginia Bradley and Franz Albert Hugo Hoffman. Hoffman. He attended the Dudley Institute of Frankfort, KY, and received his Ph.B. from Yale University in 1897. After graduation he worked in the distilling business serving as secretary and treasurer of the Hume & Lancaster Distilleries Company, Cincinnati, OH, in 1902. From 1906 to 1920 he was general superintendent for the "Hermitage" and "Old Crow" distilleries of the W. A. Gaines & Company of Frankfort, KY. He later was sales manager for the H. W. Roos Company of Cincinnati, OH.
He married on 20 Feb 1902 in Louisville, KY, to Sophie Apperson, daughter of Caleb and Alice Taylor Dorsey. They were the parents of five children: Edson Allen, Jr, Alice Taylor, William Bradley, and twins James Worthington and Caroline. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Frankfort, KY.
He died 16 Jan 1927 at Christ's Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, and was interred in Frankfort, KY.
