Catharine Baldwin Hoffmann, passed away in her sleep at age 93 on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Basking Ridge. Born in Wilmington, Del., she was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William L. Hoffmann. Known as Pat by many friends, Catharine lived in East Orange for 45 years before moving to New Vernon. Bill and Catharine later retired to Bridgehampton, N.Y. for many happy years before returning to Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge in 1997. Catharine was a graduate of East Orange High School and Hood College, in Frederick, Md. and was a state diving champion in 1932. She was a gifted writer. Her many published stories and poems delighted generations of readers. Catharine was an enthusiastic volunteer for many community organizations, including Morristown Memorial Hospital of which she was on the Board of Trustees and president of the Women's Association. She served on the Board of Trustees of Hood College and she was president of The Women's Club of Orange.
She is survived by four children, John and his wife Nancy of Spring Island, S.C. and New York, Anne Moore and her husband Richard of Mendham, James and his wife Martha of Cambridge Mass., and Ellen Wallop and her husband Michael of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Robert H. B. Baldwin of Hobe Sound, Fla., Princeton, and Bridgehampton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1 at St Mark's Church, Main Street, Mendham. There will also be a service at St. Ann's Church, Bridgehampton in June.
