Ruby A. Barry, age 91 of Wahoo, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 in Wahoo.

She was born February 14, 1918 on a farm near Colon, NE to John and Anna (Rabbass) Hoffman. She attended St. Matthew's Lutheran School near Cedar Bluffs through the sixth grade, then worked for various families in Cedar Bluffs as a housekeeper and nanny. On August 9, 1936 she married Thomas Edison Barry at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Cedar Bluffs. Following their marriage, Ruby and Tom lived on a farm near Malmo where they raised their four children.

Always a hard worker, Ruby was employed at the Blue Star and other area restaurants. For many years she cleaned District 75 School, even varnishing the wood floors each year in preparation for the start of the school. Ruby also labored on the farm, raising chickens which she butchered, sold and delivered each spring to families in Wahoo. She raised turkey, canned meats, fruits and vegetables, and even found the time and energy to drive tractor. When not caring for the home, farm and family, Ruby volunteered her time cooking chicken and noodle soup for the annual Edensburg Lutheran Church soup supper, and fundraisers for the Malmo Volunteer Fire Department. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, and other hand work. People who knew Ruby well, knew her as the "best chicken fryer in the world."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; son Larry "Butch"; daughter Bernita Hanes; and brother Raymond Hoffman.

Ruby is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Janet and Dale Jonas of Wahoo, and Joyce and Arnold Fencl of Elkhorn; sister Dorothy Hynek of Fremont; grandchildren Teri (Harlan) Dreesen of Yutan, Thomas (Denise) Fencl of Elkhorn, Matthew (Jennifer) Jonas of Lincoln, Dean (Tara) Prohaska of West Monroe, LA; great-grandchildren Kyle, Eric and Amy Dreesen, Rodney, Brooke and Andrea Fencl, Grant Jonas, and Simone Prohaska; step-greatgrandchildren Nick, Blake and Hannah Gunter.
