Mary Ann (Hoff) Bender
On December 6, 2011, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer, Mary Ann Bender let go of our hand and took the hand of Jesus.
Mary was born on July 14, 1944 in Clinton, Iowa, first born to Francis and Irene Hoff. After living in Elvira, Iowa for a short period of time the family moved to Thomson, Illinois. At an early age Mary was a huge help to her father on the family farm; she loved cows and drove a tractor from the time her feet could reach the pedals!
Mary graduated from Thomson High School in 1962 as valedictorian of her class. Earlier that year, on February 17th, she married John E. Bender, the love of her life. John left just two weeks later to serve a thirteen-month tour of duty in Korea. In his absence Mary went on to attend Professional Business Institute in St. Paul, MN. Upon John's return they were stationed in Fort Polk, LA,, Fort Lewis, WA., Baumholder, Germany, and lastly in Fort Hood, TX., where John completed his military obligation.
Mary and John returned to Lodi where Mary worked as a registered dental assistant for fifteen years. Mary then returned to school to earn her degree as a registered nurse. She worked at St. Joseph's and Lodi Memorial Hospital's until she retired in 2009. Just prior to retirement Mary was honored to be awarded "The Daisy Award For Extraordinary Nurses."
Mary enjoyed flower gardening, reading, watching game shows, playing computer games, and playing numerous games with family and friends. She was an accomplished cook and a warm hostess for family gatherings, friends, and fellow nurses from Lodi Memorial. She and John enjoyed RVing with family and numerous close friends; the "Baptist Traveling Companions." Mary was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and as a prayer partner.
Mary will be long remembered and profoundly missed as a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and loyal encouraging friend. She had the ability to light up a room and bring laughter and enjoyment to any gathering.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Stephan Allen.
She is survived by her husband, John Bender, brother, Harlan Hoff (Rita), sisters, Ruth Korolyk (Kenneth), and Nadine Zerbe (Ronald), son, Brian Bender (Cindy), daughters, Kim Bender and Tracy Lopez, ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Our loss is truly Heaven's gain!
