AUNG-THWIN--Margaret Hope, a resident of Montreal, died age 91 on April 8, 2011 at her daughter's home in NY of congestive heart failure and cancer.

Born December 20, 1919 in Burma, the first of fourteen to John Hodgson and Naw Thet Po, Margaret is survived by sisters Edna and Fanny in Burma, brothers Howard and Ralph in Australia, children John (Evelyn) in Canada, Michael (Maria) in Hawaii, Maureen in NYC, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A graduate of Judson College, Rangoon, and later SUNY Cortland, Margaret, a Fulbright Scholar, taught at the Int'l School in Rangoon, Kodaikanal School in S. India, Burmese at Cornell U, and adult education with the Miccosukee in Florida. On her retirement, she translated Ma Ma Lay's "Not Out of Hate", the first Burmese novel in English translation published outside Burma.

Her passions included Jane Austen, NYC, crosswords, aquafit, Dr Tenenbaum, and salt.

She will be interred privately at Trinity Cemetery in upper Manhattan.
