Herman was the fourth of six children born to Henry Hochmuth and Augusta "Maria" Klaumünzer. His father was born in Neustädtel and his mother was born in Schneeberg, both in Saxony, Germany. Herman's parents were married about 1867 in Schneeberg.
Herman was born in Reinsdorf, Saxony, Germany. He was 3 years, 4 months, and 24 days when he emigrated from Germany with his parents and four siblings aboard the SS Main. The ship docked in America on Mar 8, 1879. His family settled in Amana, Iowa (one of the Amana Colonies. The following year his mother gave birth to a sixth child but the baby died. His mother's health declined and she died in 1881.
Herman moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1882 when his father married Emelie "Hulda" (aka Hilda) Hölzel, a widow with four children. From this marriage, Herman had one half brother, born in Des Moines.
Herman married Mary Caroline Lindsey on Sep 27, 1897 in Sulpher Springs, Benton Co., Arkansas. Herman was a conductor for the Des Moines Railway System. Together they raised a family of five children (1) Cecil George (2) Effie "Marie" (3) Eldon Herman (4) Price Siever (5) Lois "Jeanette", all born in Des Moines, Iowa.
Herman died of a heart condition at the age of 91 years, 8 months, 6 days.
Mary died Jul 25, 1971 at the age of 91 years, 9 months, 28 days.
