William K. Hobbs, 81
SOUTH PORTLAND - William K. Hobbs, 81, of Preble Street, South Portland and Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Wells Beach, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough surrounded by his loving family after a long illness from prostate and bone cancer.
He was born in Alfred, to a very political family, the son of Thomas Hargreaves and Pauline Dudley Hobbs. He attended schools in Alfred, and graduated from Sanford High School class of 1944. He also attended the University of Maine Orono. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Corp. during WWII.
Mr. Hobbs was employed for New England Telephone, and AT&T for 33 years until his retirement in 1981. During his career with AT&T, Mr. Hobbs was a State Legislator with the 101st Legislature serving Alfred, Dayton, Arundel and Lyman where he instituted and made law to have trash barrels along state and Maine Turnpike roads. He also submitted the bill to start a culinary arts program at SMVTI in South Portland.
He was the former owner of The King William Restaurant in Wells along with his wife Hope.
He served as a York County Commissioner representing the board as Chairman where he instituted new policies for the York County Jail, established the Hope Garden at the York County Courthouse where his name is graced on a plaque on the outside wall of the York County Courthouse recognizing his contributions as Chairman of the Board as a member of the York County Commissioner. While serving as a commissioner, Mr. Hobbs was instrumental in helping obtain funding for the Visiting Nurses Association. He was known all over the State of Maine due his family ties and political affiliations as well as his working career. He was always there to lend a helping hand in any situation. He was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor.
He was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Church in Portland, a member of the Vero Beach Rotary Club, a charter member of the Wells Rotary Club where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award (highest award on the club level). He was in the Legion of Honor for the Maine Shrine Club, Kora Temple, also served as the Potentate Aide. He worked diligently for the benefit of the Shriners' Hospital Burn Unit through donations and volunteering. He was member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge #190, AF & AM where he received his 50 year membership pin.
He has traveled most all of his life and has seen many places in the world, but he always maintained his love for the great State of Maine is home. He enjoyed golf, skiing, travel, as well as his love for the ocean and family get togethers.
He is predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Hope Fenderson Hobbs who died in 1992. He recently married Margaret (Storer) Hobbs. Besides his wife of South Portland, he leaves five sons, Daniel J. and Robert D. Hobbs both of Portland, William M. "Billy" Hobbs of Wells Beach, Stephen D. and his wife Kimberly Hobbs of Falmouth Foreside and James M. Hobbs of Hoboken, N.J.; a brother, Major Frederick R. Hobbs, USAF, Ret. and his wife Dolly of Clearwater, Fla; a grandaughter, Hope Hobbs Coppersmith of Westbrook, two grandsons, Tyler W. and Judson C. Hobbs both of Falmouth Foreside; a great-grandson Zackery Hobbs Gallant of Westbrook; several nieces and nephews and many many dear friends
