Shirley Louise Allen The other half of a Greatest Generation family has passed: Shirley Louise Allen, 86, of Tallahassee died peacefully in her sleep early on January 24th.

Shirley was born on August 5th, 1923, in Cortland, Ohio to Clayton Henry Hoagland and Carrie May Chamberlin. At four months of age she and her father contracted scarlet fever, often lethal in those days. It tragically killed Clayton during a tonsillectomy; however, Shirley survived, thanks in part to her mother's sister, Mary Ann, who later raised her and Shirley's older sister, Mary Kay.

Shirley graduated with high honors from Cortland High School, where she played saxophone in the school band and starred in basketball, earning her the nickname, "Legs" Hoagland.

In early adulthood, Shirley was a legal secretary, but then she answered our country's call during World War II and joined the Marine Corps. She scored well on their aptitude tests and, given her choice of duty, she chose becoming a control tower operator, and she was sent to the Marine Corps base in Mojave, California.

At war's end, awaiting discharge, she met the love of her life: handsome Raymond Louis Allen, a Marine Corporal who'd just returned from the Pacific theatre. They married on November 30th, 1945 and returned to the Chamberlin farm in Cortland, Ohio.

Shirley and Ray moved the family to Clearwater, Florida in the mid 1950s, and from there Shirley's life became a whirlwind. In the ‘60s she was the interior decorator for thousands of mobile homes that Raymond manufactured across the country.

In the mid '70s she served as an assistant delegate to the United Nations in New York. And in the ‘80s and ‘90s she developed mountain real estate in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

Although Shirley traveled the world extensively, it was Maggie Valley and her home in Tallahassee's Rose Hollow that held her heart.

Predeceasing Shirley are her husband, Raymond, her sister, Mary Kay, and half brothers Melvin, Doug and Charles.

Shirley's life was as complete and full as any life can be; her memory will always draw gratitude, joy and love.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. EST Saturday, January 30th, in Culley's MeadowWood Timberlane Road Chapel.
Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. EST Friday, January 29th, in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 10289, Tallahassee, FL 32302.
