US Congressman. A native of New York, he worked as a store clerk and in a canal collector's office while a resident of Syracuse. He moved to Oswego, New York in 1839 to work as an agent for Bronson and Crocker, a commission merchant firm. The firm relocated him to Toledo, Ohio where Hoag later pursued business ventures in mercantile and transportation as well as in lighting and illumination. He was a referee on Toledo's Forwarders Commission in 1851 and became a business partner with Henry D. Walbridge from 1858 to 1868. He was a prominent businessman of Toledo and was industrially active in support of the Union Cause during the Civil War. He became the president of the Toledo Board of Trade and was also an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of Toledo in 1867. Elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio's 10th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1869 until his death in 1870. A cenotaph at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C. was erected in his honor and Hoag Street in Toledo was named for him.
