Anchorage resident George Hixon, 71, died Feb. 21, 2008, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A memorial service was at First Christian Church, 3031 Latouche St.

Mr. Hixon was born Sept. 9, 1936, in Oak Creek, Colo. He joined the Army in July 1959 and was sent to Whittier in December 1959. The Army closed the post at Whittier in 1960 and he was transferred to Fort Richardson to finish his tour. He and his new bride, Claudette, soon decided that Alaska was home. He went to barber college. After graduation, he worked at and then owned Sam's Barber Shop on Fifth Avenue. His adventurous spirit eventually led him to work for Veco on Granite Point oil platform in Cook Inlet, from which he retired in 1992. He then worked at Dimond Center Barber Shop for the next 10 years. He spent his retirement traveling Alaska and the Lower 48 in his RV with his wife and friends. When he wasn't out "bummin' aroundandquot;, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also spent many hours tinkering in his garden, turning a simple yard into a beautiful flower-filled haven. His family recalled: "George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who would give the shirt off of his back to someone in need. He could be counted on if you needed a ride, a favor, a dollar or someone to drink a cup of coffee with. He was generous with his time, and with his advice. He will be sorely missed by all who had the opportunity to know him. One of his most enduring qualities was his knack for making people laugh, as he loved to tease and joke around."

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claudette; daughter, Kimberly Hixon of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Sean Colette of Palmer; son, George Hixon II of Anchorage; grandchildren, Kayla, Jaci, Keith, Sean, Taylor and Kevin; brother, Chuck Hixon of Fort Collins, Colo.; sister, Thelma Keisel of Orem, Utah; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Anchorage, 500 W. International Airport Road, Suite C; Rescue Mission of Anchorage, 2823 E. Tudor Road; or Friends of Pets, 562-2535.
