Baltimore American (Baltimore, MD), February 25, 1907: "MR. P. H. HISS MAY HAVE BEEN MURDERED. Young Man's Skull Found to Be Franctured--He Had Exposed Gamblers. Mr. P. Hanson Hiss, 35 years old, a former Baltimorean and son of Mr. William J. Hiss, who lived here for many years, but now residing at Orange, N.J., whose dead body was found in the Licking River, near Newport, Ky., as told in The American of yesterday, is believed to have been murdered by gamblers he had exposed in various newspaper articles. Information to this effect was received last night in a special dispatch from Cincinnati, which said further: 'Hiss was supposed to have committed suicide because he was in poor health and his wife had left him, but today's developments indicate murder. His skull is fractured and there is evidence of a terrific struggle at the edge of the river where his body was found. Furthermore, only his feet and legs were submerged. His overcoat was found 200 feet from the river.' P. Hanson Hiss was a son of Mr. William J. Hiss, for many years a prominent merchant of this city, but who now resides at Orange, N.J. Mr. Hanson P. Hiss, Sr., an uncle of the deceased, resided until recently at 1203 North Calvert street, this city, but is now living in Lakewood, N.J. As far as could be learned last night the nearest Baltimore relatives of the deceased is Mr. James C. Hiss, 230 West Lafayette avenue, and Mr. Charles A. Hiss, 1427 Linden avenue, who are second or third cousins."
