CHESAPEAKE - Barbara Jean Hinton Alston, a good woman, mother, sister, aunt, foster grandmother, sister-in-law, loving, true and sweet friend, has gone to rest in the arms of Jesus. On Friday morning, Feb. 4, 2011, God went into his beautiful garden and choose a beautiful flower. She was a native of South Norfolk, Va., (Chesapeake) and was born June 20, 1941 to the late Willie Hinton Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Diggs Hinton Shands. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Davis and niece Lisa Davis. Sister Barbara attended Waterford Elementary School and George Washington Carver High School. In the early years, she worked as a daycare provider, housekeeper for various hotels and retired from Southland Cork after working for more than 25 years. Sister Barbara loved her family and church. She was a member of Providence United Church of Christ where she served on the Senior Usher Board. God called her and she had to go with a wave of the hand, she left us all. We are deeply sorrowful and will miss her so, but we are looking to God to sustain us and give us courage to go on. She leaves behind, a beautiful and loving daughter, Rose Comier; four sisters, Manell Little (Clifton), Lillie Williams (Charles), Linda Spruill-Banks (Marshall), Wilma Jean Chavis (Claude Jr.); five brothers, Willie Hinton Jr. (Kathrine), Theaoliver Hinton (Cynthia), Garland Hinton, Michael Eugene Hinton (Mary) and Ronnie Hinton (Vera); two uncles, William Bonner and James Bernell; one aunt, Fannie Mae Flora Griffin; 13 nieces, 15 nephews, six great-nephews, 10 great-nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends. A homegoing service will be held Friday, Feb. 11, at noon in Providence United Church of Christ, 2200 Vicker Ave., Chesapeake, with the Rev. Dr. Isaac L. McDonald presiding. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will be Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
