Harriet Hinckley Eliason, age 82, died peacefully December 28, 2002 following a year-long battle with cancer.
She was born October 1, 1920 in Salt Lake City, the eldest daughter of Ira Parnell and Cleo Cranney Hinckley. She received her BA and MA degrees from the University of Utah, where she met her beloved husband Eldon Alonzo Eliason. They were married March 11, 1946 by Church President George Albert Smith in the Salt Lake Temple. On July 16, 1997 after a 51 year marriage, Eldon preceded her in death. Together they raised six children, five of whom survive her: Jean Lyman (John), Los Alamos, New Mexico; Gayle Reiber (Steve), Seattle, Washington; Elaine Englehardt (Kirk), Provo, Utah; Gwen Church (Gary), North Salt Lake, Utah, and Lonnie Eliason (Karlene), Sandy, Utah. Preceding her in death was daughter Karen Dalley. She is also survived by her son-in-law Greg Dalley, 14 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.
She leaves behind an incredible legacy of community and church service. She served in capacities including Primary president, Relief Society president, PTA president, President of the Utah Cattlemen's Women Auxiliary Association and State President of the General Federated Women's Clubs. She was actively involved in Lyric Lore clubs. An excellent writer, she authored children's stories, and wrote numerous articles for the Salt Lake Tribune and Millard County Chronicle. She held advance certification for education of children with disabilities, whom she began teaching through the Millard County School District as a second career after her family was raised.
