DeForest was the son of
William Theodore Hilts (1848-1920) and Henrietta Drake (1849-1915).
He married Elmira Hoffmann Perry (1867-1949) on Dec. 24, 1884 when he was 18 years old and she was 17.
DeForest and Elmira had three daughters: Ella Caroline (1885-1977), Edith May (1890-1962), and Hazel Melvina (1901-1986). Of the three daughters, Ella never married. Ella lived in the home with Elmira. Her daughter, Hazel, inherited the home next door from her grandmother, Henrietta, DeForest's mother.
DeForest worked for the Delaware Lackawana Railroad.

DeForest Hilts, a lifelong resident of Netcong, died at about 6 o'clock Wednesday evening after a long period of ill health from kidney trouble, aged about 42 years. He had been for many years in the employ of the D.L. & W. as a section foreman. He is survived by his father and mother, wife, and three daughters, Mrs. Howard Trezise, and Misses Ella and Hazel Hilts.
