George H. Hilton was born in 1906 in Washington, DC, the son of Joseph Winfield Hilton and Nellie Mae Miller. He worked for the Southern Railroad in Washington and in Atlanta, GA. While living in Atlanta, he passed the Civil Service exam, whereupon he returned to Washington to work at the Interstate Commerce Commission, eventually retiring as chairman of its Board of Suspensions. In 1928, he married Aubra MacRae "Rae" Thomas. They had one son, George Thomas "Tom" Hilton.
