Mary was either the first or second daughter of Lockwood Birdsell/sall (1815-1908) and his wife Ellen (Wren) Birdsell/sall. Her headstone gives her birthdate as 1842. However, in the 1900 census, Mary stated she was born in November 1849 "at sea" as the Birdsell/sall family was en route from New York to Texas, while in the 1910 census Mary claims she was born in 1846 in Louisiana (New Orleans?) Despite the date discrepancies, these records would seem to indicate that Lockwood and Ellen Birdsell were married in New York and then came to Texas by sea in the 1840s, stopping in New Orleans on the way.

Mary's earliest years were spent in Gillespie County, Texas, and then on her father's ranch in Karnes County, Texas. About 1870 she married Henry Hilt (1832-1920), an early Texas pioneer of German heritage. Mary and Henry had a dozen or more children, nine of whom survived to adulthood: 1)Samuel, 2)John Frederick, 3)Grace Christine, 4)Ellen Sarah, 5)Augustus Thomas, 6)Riley Martin, 7)Henry Joseph, 8)Jacob and 9)Bertha Margaret. Mary spent the bulk of her adult life living near Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where she died 15 Jan 1921 from a cancer which started on her tongue.
