MARION -- Anna K. Hilliard, 92, of Marion, formerly a Natick resident for 55 years, died peacefully Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, after years of facing physical challenges with optimism, grace and humor.
For nearly 50 years, she was the wife of Irving W. Hilliard, who died in 1990.
Born Anna May Krantz in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the Rev. George B. Krantz Jr. and Anna (Jackson) Krantz, she grew up in the Philadelphia area, but lived also in Jamaica Plain and New Bedford. At age 16, she graduated from Darby High School in Darby, Pa., and in 1934 graduated with honors from Westchester State Teachers College, Westchester, Pa., with a degree in secondary education specializing in the French language.
When the Great Depression thwarted her teaching career, with typical fortitude she channeled her talents toward business and a career with Liberty Mutual, becoming one of the first woman supervisors in the company's history. Even though she lived an outwardly conventional life, Mrs. Hilliard was a quiet pioneer, a woman who was an independent thinker, witty and intelligent, able to meet life head on with strength of character, a lightness of spirit, a humorous twist and a song. Her singing voice graced many church and school productions and her gift with language produced a writing range from sparkling essays to heartfelt poetry and hilarious limericks to children's stories. At 80, she became a published poet and had completed a children's story, which was awaiting illustration. She had many gifts and many talents and, if asked, considered a sense of humor the most precious. She was kind and loving, generous and funny, beautiful of face and spirit.
She leaves two daughters, Cynthia Johnson of Florida and Beverly Hilliard of Marion; three grandchildren, Cheryl Boyd, Blake Luttrell and Megan Luttrell; and two great-grandchildren, Bianca and Brandon Boyd.
Following cremation, burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006. (from MetroWest Daily News, MA)
