Glasco Sun, March 12, 1897, page 1:
Elizabeth Hillhouse was born Dec. 3rd. 1849, in Chapelhall, Old Murkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She emigrated to the United States with her parents in March 1856, crossed the plains, by ox train, landing in Salt Lake City late in September the same year. She was married to John Brown in 1867 in Salt lake City by Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Thos. Drake. Came to Kansas with her husband in 1869, remaining two years, moved to Columbiana Co., Ohio; and returned to Kansas in 1878. She labored hard to make a comfortable home which had been accomplished.
Mrs. Brown was a kind and considerate wife, a loving mother and an affectionate neighbor, and her presence will not only be sadly missed by her family but by the entire community. She leaves behind, to mourn her loss, a husband and seven children, two boys, John and William, and five girls, Margaret, Christina, Nellie, Jennie and Effie, the youngest being nine years of age. All were present at her death, Feb. 15, 1897. Her remains were interred in the Glasco cemetery.
From life she has departed,
On earth we remain
And we will never forget
To praise her good name.
