Shirley A. Ball passed over on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was 76 years old.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne R. Ball; two sisters, Bonnie Hanna and June Blankenship and both of her parents, Dewey Hill of Wauneta and Thelma Neil of Lincoln.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Cassidy of Omaha; her three grandchildren, Mindy Brewster of Colorado, Julie Cassidy of Lincoln and Josh Cassidy of Omaha; her brothers, Tom Hill of Lincoln and Jack Hill of Colorado; her sister, Delores Collins of Lincoln and one great-granddaughter, Aliya Rose Cassidy.
Shirley was a kind and loving person above all else. She was an extremely hard worker and rarely complained. She had a quiet determination about her that was inspiring. She was very patient, slow to anger and quick to laughter.
She cared for her family fiercely and was always the glue that held everyone together.
Those who knew her best got to see her more colorful side when she would utter the rare obscenity, usually in response to frustration at not winning anything at Keno that day, which was one of the things she loved to do. She also enjoyed planting flowers and kept a large and beautiful flower garden full of roses at her home in McCook, Nebraska, that was admired by many.
After moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, she volunteered at Food Net for several years and made some wonderful new friends there.
Even though she described herself as a shy person, she easily made friends wherever she went. It was easy to love her with her kind eyes and the way she made you feel special when she talked to you. This was definitely the case when she moved to a wonderful assisted living community in Lincoln. She truly loved the time she spent at Legacy Terrace in Lincoln and the family will always be grateful for the excellent care and special friendships she made there.
Shirley was a bright spot in the lives of many and will be sorely missed by her family. The legacy she leaves behind is love and we can only hope to demonstrate it as well as she did in her lifetime.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, Roper & Sons Chapel, 4300 O Street.
