Velma Ruth Graham, 99, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Memorial visitation will be held from 12:00- 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. Private inurnment in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UMKC, Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair, AC 300 B, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64110 and/or Lake Mary Center, 100 Lakemary Drive, Paola, Kansas 66701, Attn.: Mary Wheeler.
Mrs. Graham was born March 7, 1911, in Kansas City, Missouri, daughter of Henry Stanley and Edna (Pate) Hill. She was in the first graduating class at Southwest High School. She graduated with honors from St. Mary's with a degree in nursing. She was married for over 65 years to Dr. Wallace H. Graham who was the personal White House physician to President Truman and remained his physician in Kansas City. Mrs. Graham was the first married surgical nurse at St. Mary's Hospital where she was also head of the operating room. She was always interested in continuing her education and took classes at UMKC under Mrs. Cockefair. After her early career she devoted her attention to raising her family. She was a Girl Scout leader in Washington, D.C. and a Cub Scout leader in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Wallace Harry Graham and brother Harrell Hill.
She is survived by her children Wallace Scott Graham of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Heather Ellen (Graham) Foote and husband Dr. Jerry E. Foote of Columbia, Missouri, and Dr. Bruce Douglas Graham and wife Barbara of Overland Park, Kansas, eight grandchildren Kyle and wife Elizabeth, Bryan and Greg Foote, Brandon and Kristina Graham, and Jessica, Douglas and Andy Graham, and two great-grandchildren Bella and Piersen Foote. She is also survived by cousins Dr. Shirley Hill and Beverly Peck and niece Joyce Monroe.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed by all. (Arr.: Mt. Moriah & Freeman, 816- 942-2004.)
