D. JAMES HILL MEDFORD, N.J. - D. James Hill of Medford went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 3, 2004, in the Virtua Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mount Holly, N.J. He was 80 years of age. Born in Colchester, Vt., he resided in Medford for the past 18 years, moving there from Harrisburg, Pa. He was the son of the late Delmer J. and Mary Ellen Hill. A retired architect, he owned and operated Vanguard Hill Inc. in Medford. As an architect, he was on the cutting edge of design in the 1950s and was involved in the manufacturing of affordable housing and development of patents to reduce the cost of manufacturing. He developed Wilderness Rise at Malletts Bay and built Hazelett Strip Casting in Colchester. He also built the first houses on East Terrace in Burlington, Vt. He was an advocate for the Burlington Waterfront improvements and the billboard legislature in the 1950s. An avid follower of national and international politics, he was the director of ACES and ran for Congress in 1994. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant, where he was a flight instructor and C-46 pilot flying in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He also served in the Vermont National Guard. He enjoyed bird watching and writing. He was the beloved husband of 40 years of Pat (nee Caister) Hill and the loving father of Shawn Hill of West Huntington, Vt., Dr. Scot Hill of New York City, N.Y., Bard Hill and his wife, Judy, of Richmond, Vt., Della J. Freeman and her husband, Pierre, and Laura D. Wiener and her husband, Jimmy, all of Bakersfield, Calif., and Rachael A. Flynn and her husband, Michael, of Abington, Pa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Scout and Seth Hill, Claire, Oliver, Anton, Tess and Sophie Freeman, Kevin and Allison Wiener, and Julian and Brent Flynn; and his sister, Virginia La Pointe of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Arthur. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the BRADLEY & STOW FUNERAL HOME, 127 Medford-Mount Holly Road, Medford, (Route 541), where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. Interment will be private in South Hero Village Cemetery in South Hero, Vt..
