Walter Lee Hill was born Sept. 22, 1915 in Somerville, the son of John C. and Matilda (Harker) Hill. He attended Somerville schools and later moved to Baytown. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served in Australia and in the Philippine Islands during World War II. After being discharged, he returned to Baytown and continued his work for Humble Oil Refining Company, which later became Exxon. Walter learned to repair watches at the Houston School of Horology and that became a hobby of his for many years. While living in Baytown, Walter became a licensed pilot and owned several airplanes. He was a principle organizer of the Civil Air Patrol in the Baytown Area. Walter retired from Exxon in 1979 and moved to his ranch in Washington County where he lived for several years until his failing health required him to sell his cattle and move to Somerville. Being a veteran was always important to him and he was a member of the Baytown American Legion and the Marion Mays American Legion Post #455 of Somerville.
