Ernest was raised in Hollister, California. He was married twice, first to Olivia Cardoza, in Hollister, CA, with whom he had two daughters, Marjorie and Geraldine. His second marriage was to Irene "Lena" De Simone. He adopted her son, Jimmy, and together they had Ernest, Jr.
In addition to having a day job, he also could play the accordion, and played at different clubs in the evening.
In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, during WWII, in San Francisco, CA, while a resident of Alameda County. He was with the Corps of Engineers, 42nd Inf. Div. He died somewhere in France, possibly in Wimmenau, at the rank of PFC.
He was initially buried in France, but was repatriated in 1949, and buried in Antioch, CA.
