Bernie, as he was affectionately known, retired May 8, 1979 after serving in the Vietnam War as an RMC, USN. His second career lead him to utilize his military experience as a Communications Specialist, where he helped install computerized telephone systems in the San Diego county school district.
Bernard was married for 43 years to Elizabeth Mae Frazier.
He had a passion for Genealogy and was the Vice President of the San Diego African American Genealogy Research Group when he passed.
Bernie's greatest discovery was that his forth great grandfather and his three sons all fought in the Revolutionary War. The Hill's had three sons Christopher, Jaime, Tony and one daughter Moniquie.
