Ellen was the youngest daughter of James Sheen Sr. and Maria Loveridge of White Oak, Berrow, Worcester, England.
She was barely 19 when she boarded the "Enoch Train" sailing vessel, along with her family, when they set out for America. She was with them in joining the first handcart company of LDS Church members who traveled with Captain Edmund Ellsworth. They left Iowa City (Coralville encampment) June 9th 1856, headed for the Great Salt Lake Valley.
Ellen, along with her 22 year old sister, Hannah, would have been one of those helping prepare her mother's body for burial, as Maria Loveridge Sheen died the very day they had to depart. Their encampment was actually on the outskirts of Iowa City at Coralville, thus named for the coral mining deposits nearby.
Ellen's mother, Maria, was buried at a makeshift burying ground along with an unknown number of other Saints who had perished while working to aquire the necessary supplies for travel to a better home. They had to say a hurried goodbye to their precious mother as the camp packed for the trek west.
Two years after reaching the valley, Ellen married Joseph Hill Jr., 28 Dec 1858, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. He was also from England, the son of Edith Ann Marston and Joseph Hill of Sandhurst, Gloucestershire.
